This is a video of my apartment balcony garden. I have no access to a water spicket so I had to be inventive on how I could automate the watering of my garden. I have a container garden so frequent watering is a must as the containers heat up during the day and dry out quicker than ground based gardens. Also, I enjoy having an automated system so I am able to go out of town without having to pay anyone or worry about the garden drying up. During my research for this project I found little to no first hand experience with this type of irrigation system, so I hope I am able to help some of you out there who are in the same predicament I was. My mini drip irrigation system starts with a storage container as my water reservoir. Inside the reservoir I use a direct drive 330 gallon / hour pond pump to pressurize my system. I purchased at Lowe's for around or . From the pump I run a 1/2" main line across the span of the garden along the balcony railing. Each plant utilizes its own 1/4" tube that branches off from the main line. This reduces pressure loss through the line and ensures maximum pressure for each dripper. I use a digital timer (approx. from Lowe's) to power on the pump 3 times / day for 1 minute increments (7AM, Noon, 7PM).
